Vung Tau – An all-season tourist city
Vung Tau is 125km from Ho Chi Minh City. The name Vung Tau means Bay of Ships and the peninsula is geographically an ideal place for boats and ships to shelters from storms. Vung Tau has 15km of coastline and endowed with fine sand beaches, rocky outcrops and evergreen vegetation. Average temperature is 28oC. The temperature of the water is around 25oC, making Vung Tau a perfect seaside resort.
Places to visit:
Thich Ca Phat Dai (Buddha Temple: is a pagoda built on Nui Lon ( Big Mountain) 3km from the center of the city, and completed in 1963 through donations from local Buddhists. Visible from a long distance away is a reinforced concrete statue of the Buddha 6.2m high, standing on a 4m high pedestal. The Bao thap tower is 19m high. There are four urns at the corners of the towers, said to contain lumps of earth taken from four places in India related to Buddhism. All these monuments located in a landscape of scenic beauty.
Niet Ban Tinh Xa (Stop-over before attaining Nirvana): popularly called Phat Nam Pagoda (Reclining Buddha), this is considered the most beautiful pagoda in Vung Tau, 2km from the center of the city. In the main shrine in the pagoda, there is a statue of the reclining Buddha made of reinforced concrete surfaced with marble. This 12m long statue lies on a 2.5m high pedestal.
